Context
The Ravenna ESPYs are an annual awards ceremony celebrating student-athletes across multiple sports within the Ravenna School District. The event combines live presentation, video storytelling, and in-room production to recognize athletic achievement, leadership, and community impact.
The challenge was delivering a professional-quality production with limited resources, a fixed live schedule, and a diverse audience that included athletes, families, coaches, administrators, and community members.
My Role
I served as the primary creative and production lead for the event, overseeing:
- Event storytelling and narrative flow
- Video production and visual assets
- Live-event execution and technical coordination
- Brand consistency and presentation standards
I was responsible for ensuring the event felt cohesive, polished, and meaningful—despite real-world constraints typical of scholastic athletics.
Strategy
The goal was to elevate the event beyond a standard awards night by using storytelling and pacing to create emotional continuity and professional credibility.
Key strategic decisions included:
- Designing a consistent visual and narrative framework across all award segments
- Using short-form video to spotlight athletes while maintaining live-event momentum
- Structuring transitions to reduce dead time and technical risk
- Prioritizing clarity and accessibility in visuals and audio for a mixed-age audience
Rather than maximizing spectacle, the strategy emphasized respect for the athletes and the community, ensuring the event felt celebratory without feeling overproduced.
Execution
- Produced and edited video segments for award presentations
- Developed visual assets aligned with the event’s tone and brand
- Coordinated timing between video playback, presenters, and live cues
- Managed technical logistics to ensure smooth transitions during the ceremony
All assets were designed to function reliably in a live environment where adaptability and quick decision-making were essential.
Outcome
- Successful live execution with minimal disruption or downtime
- Strong positive feedback from athletes, families, and school leadership
- An elevated event experience that reinforced pride in the athletic program
- Demonstrated ability to balance creative ambition with logistical realities
The event highlighted my ability to lead creative production while maintaining operational discipline in a live setting.
Why This Matters
Live events demand more than creativity—they require anticipation, adaptability, and calm execution under pressure. This project reflects my ability to translate storytelling principles into real-time environments where precision and judgment matter as much as vision.
